Dry eye often begins when there’s a problem with one of the layers that make up your tear film. Each layer plays an important role in keeping your eyes comfortable and protected:
Oil layer – Helps slow tear evaporation
Water layer – Provides hydration and essential nutrients
Mucus layer – Helps your tears spread evenly and stay on the eye’s surface
When any part of this system isn’t working properly, it can lead to dryness, irritation, and blurry vision. Dr. Uyemura will evaluate your tear quality and structure to better understand what’s causing your symptoms, and how to treat them effectively.

Dry eye symptoms can vary from person to person. You may experience just one or several of the following:
A burning, stinging, or scratchy feeling
Itchy or irritated eyes
Excessive tearing or watery eyes
Sensitivity to light
Redness in or around the eyes
Blurry or fluctuating vision
Tired or fatigued eyes, especially later in the day
A feeling like something is in your eye
Discomfort while wearing contact lenses
Evaporative Dry Eye
The most common type. This happens when the meibomian glands (which keep your tears from evaporating) become blocked. Without a stable tear film, eyes dry out quickly, even if you’re producing enough tears.
Aqueous Deficiency
This occurs when your eyes don’t produce enough tears in the first place, often because of age, medical conditions, or certain medications.
Dr. Uyemura will evaluate your tear quality, quantity, and gland function to determine which type of dry eye you have, and which treatments may help most.

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy is a light-based treatment used to reduce inflammation and improve oil gland function, a common cause of dry eye symptoms.
It’s especially helpful for patients with rosacea or facial redness that affects the skin around the eyes as well as for the treatment of sun spots (age spots). IPL is a gentle, in-office procedure with no downtime, and many patients experience results after just a few sessions.
